Prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, have set conditions for the party’s forthcoming national convention, insisting that the zoning arrangement adopted in 2021 must be retained.
Meeting under the platform of Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP in Abuja on Monday night, the group demanded that the office of the National Chairman remain in the North-Central. They also called for fresh congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra States, a new South-East Zonal Congress, and Local Government congresses in Ekiti State.
In addition, the leaders urged the party to respect the outcome of the February 22, 2025 South-South Congress held in Calabar, Cross River State, which has been recognised by the court.
The resolutions were contained in a communiqué read by former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, who warned that failure to meet the demands would render any convention invalid, as legitimate members could be disenfranchised.
Those present at the meeting included Minister Nyesom Wike, PDP National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, former Governors Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ayo Fayose (Ekiti), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), House Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule, and several state chairmen of the party.
Also in attendance were serving and former members of the National Assembly as well as the party’s Vice Chairmen for North-Central and South-South, Abdulrahman Mohammed and Dan Orbih.
The communiqué emphasised the need for fairness, inclusivity, and respect for court rulings in the party’s internal processes, stressing that unity cannot be achieved through disenfranchisement or exclusion.
