The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has cautioned the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) against naming major roads and streets in the Abuja city centre after private individuals without proper authorization from the FCT Administration.
Wike issued the warning on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, during the flag-off of road construction projects in the Guzape District, extending into the AIT neighbourhoods of the Asokoro cadastral zone.
He described as “unacceptable” the practice by the AMAC authorities, led by Chairman Christopher Maikalangu, of assigning names of private citizens to roads and infrastructure funded by the FCT Administration.
The Minister stressed that streets should be named only after individuals who have made significant contributions to national development or the FCT, noting that naming rights for private citizens who pay fees should be limited to satellite towns where the council directly provides infrastructure.
“We cannot be doing roads and even infrastructure with our funds, and then wake up to find they have been named after private individuals,” Wike said, directing the AMAC Chairman to “go and refund their money.”
He further insisted that the FCT Administration must approve all street names, warning: “You don’t just name an important street after somebody when you don’t know where the money is coming from. You will not do that again.”
