Tension appears to be building again in Rivers State following comments by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, which suggest a possible renewal of political hostilities with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Speaking on Friday while addressing political stakeholders from Ahoada East and Ahoada West Local Government Areas, Wike took an apparent swipe at individuals he accused of suddenly claiming ownership of a political mandate.
“Those who are now shouting ‘on your mandate we shall stand’ should remember that we have been standing on the mandate since 2023,” Wike said.
In what many observers interpreted as a direct message to the Rivers State governor and his allies, the former governor of the state insisted that political agreements must be respected.
“Don’t worry, we will start politics in January. Agreement is agreement. You cannot use people and dump them after you have achieved what you wanted,” he stated.
Wike repeatedly emphasized his position with the phrase “agreement is agreement,” reinforcing speculation of deepening cracks within the state’s political structure.
He also vowed that political activities would resume fully in January, a declaration that has heightened concerns about renewed political tensions in Rivers State as the new year approaches.
