The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reclaimed 7,000 hectares of land from the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), accusing the institution of illegally acquiring and fencing off 11,000 hectares in the Giri District without official documentation.
Wike made the announcement during the commissioning of newly constructed access roads in the area, where he criticised the university for what he described as unlawful land appropriation.
“The University on their own grabbed 11,000 hectares. I said that will not happen. No document, nothing. You see them fencing everywhere, and before you know it, they would have gone to sell our land,” the minister stated.
He directed the Director of Lands and other relevant agencies under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to limit the university’s allocation to 4,000 hectares. The remaining 7,000 hectares, he said, would be reallocated for strategic development projects aimed at boosting growth in the district.
Wike assured residents and stakeholders of the FCTA’s commitment to infrastructure development, stating that internal road construction in the district would commence shortly to enhance accessibility and living standards.
