The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says the 16 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are free to leave, stressing that his camp will continue working with lawmakers who remain loyal to the party.
Wike made the remark on Friday while addressing journalists after inspecting the construction of an interchange bridge connecting Maitama, Gishiri, Jahi and Gwarimpa in Abuja.
Sixteen lawmakers, including Speaker Martins Amaewhule, had earlier announced their defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during plenary, citing internal divisions within the PDP. Amaewhule said he was joining the APC to “work with Mr President,” whom he praised for meaning well for the country.
Reacting, Wike described their exit as “unfortunate,” noting that the PDP’s internal crisis played a major role. He added that the lawmakers did not inform him before leaving but maintained that they have the right to do so.
Wike urged the PDP to put its house in order and said his camp would continue to work for the progress and betterment of the party.
