Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has highlighted his contributions to developing the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Rivers State University, and Nigeria’s legal education sector.
Wike made the remarks on Saturday in Port Harcourt during UNIPORT’s 35th Combined Convocation and 50th Anniversary ceremony.
The former Rivers State Governor said UNIPORT laid the intellectual foundation for his socio-economic and political rise, adding that he was thoroughly equipped in character and learning during his time at the institution. He urged fellow alumni to support the university as a gesture of gratitude.
Recalling his tenure as Minister of State for Education, Wike noted that he facilitated the establishment of UNIPORT’s Faculty of Law and constructed a dedicated building for it. He also built a separate structure for the Faculty of Social Sciences, which had previously shared facilities with the Faculty of Humanities.
On infrastructure, Wike said the idea to construct a convocation arena came after the university management informed him of the lack of a befitting venue for major academic events. He said the project, delivered to international standards, was part of his commitment to educational development.
Wike added that similar interventions were extended to Rivers State University, where he earned his law degree.
