The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day and announced a restriction of movement from 8:00 p.m. on Friday to 6:00 a.m. on Saturday ahead of the February 21 Area Council elections.
Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications to Wike said the Minister made the announcement in a special nationwide broadcast on Thursday. He said the measures were approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure a smooth and peaceful conduct of the elections.
Wike urged residents of the FCT to come out in large numbers to elect chairmen and councillors across the six area councils, describing the poll as a crucial opportunity to shape the future of the territory.
He called on voters to conduct themselves in an orderly and lawful manner, stressing the need to respect electoral rules, fellow citizens and the eventual outcome of the election.
According to the minister, the work-free day is intended to enable residents travel to their respective communities to participate in the exercise. He added that security agencies have been directed to enforce strict compliance with the movement restriction.
Wike also commended President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026 into law, noting that the move underscores the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible elections.
He expressed optimism that the elections would produce quality leaders capable of advancing development, peace and prosperity in the FCT.
