The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has imposed a two-week ban on markets for used items, known as “Panteka,” within the FCT.
The ban, which begins on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, was announced during an FCT Security Council meeting and shared via a post on X by the minister’s media aide, Lere Olayinka.
Additionally, the minister prohibited scavenging activities in Abuja, restricting scavengers to operating only at designated dump sites.
A statement from the minister emphasized that those caught vandalizing public infrastructure would face charges for economic sabotage and even attempted murder.
