The Federal Government has disclosed that Nigeria is not the only country to impose sanction on hate speech, stating that some nations have stricter sanctions.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed who made this known during an interview on TVC Today in Abuja said, the government increased the fine on hate speech, to stop people from destabilizing the country.
“What motivated the amendment was that when the fine was N500,000 we saw the provision being violated at will because the amount was very easy to pay,” Lai, said.
The minister noted that the changes are not to stifle freedom of speech but to regulate social media.
