Port Harcourt, March 5, 2025 – Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has officially handed over an AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to enhance national security, improve aerial surveillance, and support emergency response operations.
The donation, which took place at the 115 Special Operations Group of the NAF Base in Rumuomasi, is part of the state’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s economic assets, particularly in the Niger Delta region. Governor Fubara emphasized that the move aligns with federal efforts to increase crude oil production and boost national revenue.
The helicopter had been inactive due to a dispute with its previous operator, Aero Contractors. Following a request from the Chief of Air Staff, the Rivers State Executive Council approved its transfer to the NAF for optimal use. Governor Fubara stressed that the decision was made in the interest of security and development, with no political motives.
Receiving the helicopter, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff, commended the state government’s gesture, noting that the aircraft will enhance tactical airlift, search and rescue missions, and disaster relief efforts. He assured that NAF personnel are undergoing training to ensure its effective deployment.
The formal handover included the signing of documents by state and military officials, further strengthening the partnership between Rivers State and the Nigerian Air Force in securing critical national infrastructure.
