President Bola Tinubu has said his nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was informed by the nominee’s integrity, non-partisan disposition, and distinguished record of public service.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President made the remarks on Thursday during a meeting of the National Council of State at the State House, Abuja, where the council unanimously endorsed Amupitan’s nomination.
Tinubu noted that Amupitan, a professor of law from Kogi State in North-Central Nigeria, is the first person from the state to be appointed to head the nation’s electoral body.
Amupitan is to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose 10-year tenure as INEC Chairman ended on Tuesday.
