Professor, Precious Nwobidi Ede a lecturer in the Department of Geography and Director of academic planning, Rivers State University says the flooding currently experienced in some parts of the country is caused within.
Ede, whose areas of concentration are Research Methodology, Geography and Environmental Management, Urban and Regional Planning, Air Pollution and Emission Modelling and Climate Change in a live chat with the Team Lead of Elanhub, Dr. Sarah Chidiebere Joe revealed that there are some natural factors responsible for the flooding currently witnessed across parts of the country.
He dismissed claims that the Cameroonian government is partly responsible for it. ” The effect of the opening of the Lagdo dam diminishes within a 100 kilometers or 50 kilometers in Nigeria, what is causing flooding in Nigeria is within Nigeria and that is from Kongolo, Kastsina ala and dogo rivers all in Taraba state Nigeria,” he said.
“It was not just the Ladgo dam that released waters, others did too. The waters released from the shiroro dam enters the River Niger, it passes through Lokoja, Orashi these are tributaries of the River Niger,” he added.
He noted that some parts of Bayelsa and Rivers State are flood gates. Though this year is much but it is an annual occurrence.
The Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Abua-Odua and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas in the Orashi region of Rivers State and other parts of Nigeria are heavily affected by the flooding with growing concern of worsening humanitarian crisis and epidemic outbreak.
