The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has announced the construction of six multi-purpose emergency shelters for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers states.
The initiative, spearheaded by the NDDC’s Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, is part of the commission’s efforts to address the recurrent challenges posed by flooding in the region.
According to the NDDC, the shelters are designed to serve as temporary havens for individuals and families displaced by floods. Each facility will have the capacity to accommodate over 1,000 people, providing essential relief and safety during emergencies.
The initiative comes in the wake of repeated calls for improved disaster preparedness in flood-prone areas. Communities in Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers states are among those most affected by seasonal flooding, which often leads to significant displacement and destruction of property.
