A concerned parent in Rivers State, who pleaded anonymity has raised an alarm over alleged extortion of students writing their Senior School Certificate Examination, by a school in Oyigbo Local Government Area, CSS Okoloma.

The parent, in a statement accused the school of collecting one thousand five hundred naira from students to submit their answer sheets.

This is despite the declaration of the Rivers State Government that the exams be free for all students.

Her post reads,

Good day, ma’am. Please I don’t want my identity revealed, but I need to speak out. Please help post this on the Concerned Parents and Educators platform so that many will read and be aware of the decay in our school system.

The Rivers State government declared that NECO and WAEC exams be free for all SS3 students of 2020/2021 session. This announcement was met with excitement by so many poor families who can barely feed, talkless of registering their wards for this exams.

A school in Oyigbo Local Gocernment Area CSS Okoloma has not made it easy for the parents. The wickedness is that every child sitting for the exams must submit their papers with one thousand naira. English or maths, one thousand five hundred. Failure to pay at the submission point will mean automatic absentia from the exam for that day because the invigilators will crumple the paper and trash it before the child/children that cannot afford the money for submission.

They also demand extra money paid to them for the answers to be supplied to the children.

The so-called exam invigilators are robbing poor families of their hard-earned money. Imagine where about 200 students sit for one paper and each submits with 1000 that is #200,000 just for one paper. On the days of English or Maths, the 200 students pay 1500 each, that is about #300,000. (English and Maths will be #600,000).

On average, multiply 1000 by 200 by 9 papers and see how much these corrupt individuals have made off traders and farmers with exams that are supposed to be free of charge.

I am so vexed in my spirit. The cries and pains of the poor will haunt these men/women perpetuating this evil in that school and anywhere in Nigeria. They will never know peace!
