A Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) game between Katsina United and Barau Football Club descended into chaos on Saturday after a Barau FC player, Nana Abraham, was attacked by enraged fans.
The violence erupted moments after Barau’s Orji Kalu scored in the 69th minute to level the game at 1-1. The equalizer appeared to anger some Katsina United supporters, who invaded the pitch and assaulted the visiting player, leaving him with a deep cut on the neck.
Barau FC confirmed the incident on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating: “70′ The match is briefly delayed due to an attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC.”
Images from the scene showed Abraham bleeding heavily as teammates and security personnel rushed to his aid. The match was temporarily halted before order was restored and play eventually resumed, ending 1-1.
As of press time, the NPFL was yet to release an official statement regarding the attack, while concerns mount over player safety and crowd control at league venues.
