Venezuela’s opposition leader and democracy activist, María Corina Machado, has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday.
Machado was honoured for her unwavering commitment to democratic reforms, human rights, and peaceful resistance against authoritarian rule in Venezuela. The Committee praised her courage in the face of political persecution and her advocacy for free and fair elections.
Her win comes as former U.S. President Donald Trump, who had also been nominated, missed out on the prestigious award.
Machado, a long-time critic of President Nicolás Maduro’s government, has been a leading figure in the Venezuelan opposition movement, pushing for international attention to the country’s political and humanitarian crises.
The Nobel Committee said her recognition “sends a message of hope to those fighting for democracy under oppressive regimes around the world.”
