The United States Department of State has issued a fresh travel advisory warning its citizens against travelling to Rivers State and a number of other states in Nigeria due to heightened security risks.
In its updated advisory, the State Department urged Americans to “reconsider travel” to Nigeria, citing widespread crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and limited access to quality medical services. It listed Rivers State—excluding Port Harcourt—as one of several areas designated under the “Do Not Travel” category.
The advisory says parts of the country continue to experience violent crime, armed gang activity, and kidnapping incidents, prompting U.S. authorities to strongly discourage travel to affected regions.
The State Department also cautioned that health-care services in parts of Nigeria may not meet U.S. standards, advising travellers to take necessary precautions and avoid high-risk locations.
The updated notice is part of the U.S. government’s regular review of global security conditions for its citizens abroad.
