The United States has confirmed the deployment of a small contingent of ground troops to Nigeria, marking a new phase in security cooperation between both countries.
The disclosure was made on Tuesday by General Dagvin Anderson, commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), during a press briefing. According to him, the deployment followed recent joint security engagements aimed at strengthening counterterrorism and regional stability efforts.
This development represents the first public acknowledgment of US troops operating on Nigerian soil since the administration of former President Donald Trump carried out airstrikes against terrorist targets in Sokoto State on Christmas Day.
While details of the mission and troop strength were not disclosed, AFRICOM indicated that the presence is limited and focused on collaborative security objectives.
