UNIPORT Lecturer Exposes Deception Behind ‘Sign-Out’ JamboreesA lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, Ovunda Ihunwo, has expressed concern over the growing trend of parents joining their children in lavish “sign-out” celebrations without verifying their academic status.
Speaking on the issue, Ihunwo said many students exploit the event to create a false impression of academic success, often deceiving their parents.
He recounted an incident where a mother discovered that her daughter, who had supposedly graduated two years earlier, had yet to complete twelve outstanding courses. The lecturer noted that the student, despite participating in “sign-out” activities, had missed one academic session and risked being withdrawn if she failed to regularise her studies.
“Some of these children don’t appreciate what parents go through to see them through school. They are only interested in jamborees and false pretences for optics. How does one sign out when you’re unsure of your results?” Ihunwo asked.
He advised parents and guardians to always confirm their wards’ academic standing directly from the university instead of relying solely on information provided by the students. According to him, only through such vigilance can families avoid disappointment after investing heavily in their children’s education.
