The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has dismissed widespread rumours circulating on social media about the alleged killing of a “big snake” described as a deity within one of its classrooms.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Dr. Sammy Kpenu, Head of Information, Publications, and Public Relations, the university categorically denied the existence of any such incident, labeling the claims as “entirely false, baseless, and a figment of the imagination of mischief-makers.”
The management also addressed a viral voice note accompanying the rumour, which it said was intended to incite fear and spread misinformation among the public.
“For the avoidance of doubt, no snake was seen, no snake was killed, and no such incident occurred anywhere on campus,” the statement read.
The university condemned those behind the false reports, accusing them of seeking cheap popularity and social media attention at the expense of the institution’s reputation.
UNIPORT reaffirmed that its campus remains safe and conducive for learning, research, and other legitimate activities. It urged students, staff, and the general public to disregard the rumour and rely solely on official communication channels for accurate information.
The university also warned that it is monitoring the situation and would report anyone found deliberately spreading misinformation to the appropriate authorities.
