The University of Port Harcourt has dismissed allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of office against the Chairman of its Governing Council, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, describing the claims as false, misleading, and politically motivated.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Head of Information, Publications, and Public Relations, Dr. Sam Kpenu, the institution said the allegations, reportedly contained in a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), were aimed at tarnishing the image of the council and its leadership.
The university clarified that all decisions of the Governing Council are made collectively in line with statutory procedures and financial regulations. It stated that the procurement of vehicles for the institution strictly followed the Public Procurement Act, with advertisements placed in national newspapers and the Federal Tenders Journal in April and May 2025.
Following technical and financial evaluations, contracts were awarded to Lanre Shittu Motors and Metropolitan Motors Limited, described as reputable automobile firms. The statement stressed that all vehicles supplied were brand new and met approved specifications.
The university also rejected claims of bid rigging, insisting that the Tender Committee operated transparently, with all members endorsing the process. It further stated that no public funds had been misappropriated, as all finances were managed in accordance with approved budgets and subjected to audits.
While pledging full cooperation with the EFCC, UNIPORT cautioned against circulating unverified claims before investigations are concluded. The Governing Council reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the progress of the institution.
