The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has confirmed the death of three of its students in a tragic road accident that occurred on Monday morning along the Eliozu–Rumuokoro section of the East-West Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The students were among several occupants of a shuttle minibus that crashed into a stationary truck. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the collision claimed the lives of two young women and a male child. Sector Commander Iyang Umoh noted that some of the victims were confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital, while the minibus driver remains unconscious and is receiving treatment.
Speaking to reporters, UNIPORT spokesperson Dr. Sam Kpenu identified one of the deceased as Sylvia Okoh, a 300-level Economics student. He said her family has been informed. Another student, Edwin Chidinma Blessing, also in 300 level, suffered serious injuries but is now stable after undergoing surgery.
Emergency responders have cleared the scene, and an investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
As of the time of filing this report, the Rivers State Police Command had not issued an official reaction to the incident.
