The University of Port Harcourt has commenced the process of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor as the tenure of the incumbent, Professor Owunari Georgewill, approaches its end.
The decision was reached on Monday during a meeting of the university’s Governing Council, chaired by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, where approval was granted for the initiation of the appointment process.
The development signals a forthcoming transition in the institution’s leadership, aimed at sustaining academic excellence and driving further institutional growth.
As part of the process, the position of Vice-Chancellor is scheduled to be formally advertised on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, officially opening the application window to eligible candidates.
Members of the Governing Council have assured that the selection exercise will be conducted in a transparent and competitive manner to ensure the emergence of the most qualified candidate.
With the timeline now set and the advertisement imminent, the race for the top administrative position at the University of Port Harcourt has officially begun.
