The United Kingdom has disassociated itself from the alleged financial fraud, levelled against Yakubu Gowon by Tom Tugendhat a member of the UK parliament, few weeks ago.
Tugendhat had during a debate accused the former head of state of looting half of the nation’s wealth when he was about leaving office.
A member of the Foreign Commonwealth and Development office, Nigeria unit, Mrs. Angela disclosed this in a reply to a petition to the British Parliament by a group, Igbo for a Progressive Nigeria.
The group had written to the commission after the allegation was made by Mr. Tugendhat, demanding details.
Mrs. Angela noted that the statement by the lawmaker was not on behalf of the British Parliament but a personal statement.
