The United States government has revoked the visas of 80,000 foreign nationals, including a significant number of Nigerians, citing crimes and security threats.
In a statement released on Thursday, the U.S. Department of State said the decision aligns with the Trump administration’s pledge to safeguard Americans, describing the action as “promises made, promises kept.”
According to the department, the affected individuals were linked to various offenses, including assault, theft, and driving under the influence. About 16,000 visas were revoked for DUI-related offenses, 12,000 for assault, and 8,000 for theft. Others were penalized for visa overstays and alleged support for terrorism.
The department emphasized that the move underscores Washington’s commitment to public safety, warning that visa holders who violate U.S. laws would face immediate repercussions.
While assuring that genuine and law-abiding travelers have nothing to fear, the statement reiterated the administration’s resolve to prioritize the security and interests of American citizens.
