Two people, including an official of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), were electrocuted on Monday following a fire sparked by an electrical surge in Okrika, Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours when power was restored to the area after an outage. According to eyewitnesses, the sudden surge caused a spark in one of the residential buildings, leading to a fire outbreak.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said the NDLEA official was electrocuted while attempting to remove the fuse in his apartment in response to the electrical spark.
“There was no light in the area before. When electricity was restored early this morning, it triggered a spark in one of the houses, and that’s when the unfortunate incident happened,” the witness said.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement as investigations into the incident continue.
