The Rivers State chapter of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Thursday boycotted the 2025 Workers’ Day celebrations in protest against the state of emergency declared in the state.
The union described the emergency declaration by President Bola Tinubu as “hasty and unconstitutional,” calling for its immediate reversal.
During a press briefing held at the TUC Secretariat in Port Harcourt, State Secretary June Danagogo read a statement on behalf of the union, condemning the President’s action as “a blatant violation of the Constitution” and “a direct assault on democracy.”
Instead of participating in the traditional Workers’ Day march at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, union members gathered at the secretariat to register their disapproval of the federal government’s move.
