President Bola Tinubu is unlikely to give assent to the amended Electoral Act, particularly the provision on real-time electronic transmission of election results, his media aide has indicated.
Sunday Dare, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, made the remarks during an appearance on Arise TV. He cited the country’s limited Internet infrastructure as a major hurdle, noting that Nigeria currently lacks the capacity to transmit election results from polling units in real time via INEC’s IREV platform.
Mr. Dare emphasized that the President would weigh the nation’s technological realities before making a decision on the bill.
“I can assure you that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a renowned democrat, will do what is right, but it will not be in isolation of the realities of our country,” he said.
He further stressed that the volume of data required for real-time electronic transmission of poll results exceeds Nigeria’s current Internet capabilities exceeds Nigeria’s current Internet capabilities.
