President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has requested the approval of the Senate for the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin.
The request was conveyed in a letter addressed to the upper chamber and read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary.
According to the communication, the President cited constitutional backing for the move, noting: “Pursuant to Section 5, Subsection 5, Part 2 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended.”
Further details on the nature and duration of the proposed deployment are expected to be deliberated upon by the Senate.
