President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate rollout of 100,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits nationwide to help cushion the impact of rising transportation costs triggered by the ongoing Middle East conflict.
The Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), Ismaeel Ahmed, disclosed the President’s directive to journalists after a meeting with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Ahmed said the President is closely monitoring global developments and their implications for Nigeria’s energy sector, particularly the effect of the Middle East war on fuel prices and transportation costs.
He explained that the conversion kits, expected to be deployed within the next two to three weeks, will be distributed in collaboration with various stakeholders. The initiative will allow vehicle owners, including tricycle operators, to convert their engines to run on compressed natural gas.
Ahmed further noted that Tinubu has also ordered the expansion of supporting infrastructure along major transport corridors, with special attention to northern routes.
According to him, about 77 CNG refilling stations are currently under development across the country, with plans to create a network of refuelling points along key routes from Lokoja through Abuja, Kaduna, Zaria, and Kano to Maiduguri.
