Former Kogi State governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Senator Dino Melaye, has accused the federal government of worsening the hardship facing Nigerians through excessive borrowing despite claims of increased revenue.
Speaking on ARISE Television on Monday, Melaye said hunger and poverty have reached alarming levels across the country while the administration continues to pile up foreign debts.
He questioned the rationale behind the president’s request for a $1.7 billion World Bank loan and the Senate’s approval of $21 billion in borrowings so far.
“This government is one of the most reckless in the history of this country. The president, who said he came to curb wastages, went ahead to buy a yacht. That yacht has never been to Nigeria’s territorial waters; it’s been between Monaco and Paris. What do we need a yacht for in a time of austerity and pervasive hunger?” Melaye asked.
The former lawmaker alleged that President Tinubu has borrowed more than any of his predecessors, describing the trend as unsustainable.
“If you are making more money, then why are you borrowing? We will not be surprised if the president starts borrowing from Opay and Moniepoint very soon,” he added.
