President Bola Tinubu has rejected rumours that his administration is working towards creating a one-party state in Nigeria, calling the allegations unfounded and historically inaccurate.
Speaking before a joint session of the National Assembly on Democracy Day, Tinubu offered what he called a “most personal promise”:
“At no time in the past, nor any instance in the present, and no future juncture shall I view the notion of a one-party state as good for Nigeria.”
Referencing his political history, Tinubu reminded lawmakers and the nation that he had stood alone in the early 2000s against efforts by a dominant party to eliminate opposition, particularly during his time as Lagos State governor.
The President called on opposition parties to strengthen their internal structures, rather than resort to conspiracies. He also welcomed new APC defectors, notably Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State and Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom.
His comments are seen as an attempt to calm rising political tensions amid high-profile defections and alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
