Vice President Kashim Shettima has been directed to lead a Federal Government delegation to Kano to sympathise with victims of the Singer Market fire disaster.
The directive was given by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, according to a State House press release. The delegation is scheduled to depart Abuja to deliver the President’s condolences and support to traders who reportedly lost goods worth billions of naira in the weekend blaze. The incident is the second fire outbreak recorded at the market within two weeks.
The team will also announce financial assistance on behalf of the Federal Government and express readiness to support the Kano State Government in efforts to ensure the quick reopening of the market.
Members of the delegation include Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senator Kawu Ismaila, and Chairman of the House Appropriation Committee Abubakar Kabir Bichi.
Also listed are the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Bernard M. Doro, and the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mrs Zubaida Umar.
The President had earlier held a telephone conversation with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, where he conveyed his condolences to affected traders and residents. He also ordered a comprehensive investigation into the recurring market fires, describing the repeated incidents as deeply troubling.
