President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sympathy with Nigerian-British former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, following a tragic road accident in Ogun State that left the boxer injured and claimed the lives of two of his associates.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said in a telephone conversation on Monday, President Tinubu spoke personally with Joshua to convey his condolences and wish him a speedy recovery. The President said he also offered prayers for the boxer during the call.
“I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital,” the President said.

Additionally, the President held a conversation with Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital with Joshua. Governor Abiodun assured the President that everything possible would be done to ensure the boxer receives the best medical attention.
Earlier, President Tinubu, who is currently abroad, had taken to his official X handle to express profound sympathy with Joshua over the accident, which occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
“I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride,” the President wrote.
“In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny. I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed,” he added.
