The Bonny Local Government Council has expressed deep sorrow over a tragic boat mishap on the Bonny-Port Harcourt sea route on Sunday, January 19, 2025, which claimed the lives of two adults and a toddler.
According to preliminary investigations, the accident was caused by a sudden oceanic storm that destabilized the boat. While 19 passengers survived and were immediately provided medical attention by the Council, three lives were tragically lost.
In a statement signed by the Council Secretary, Pastor John Gabriel-Pepple, the Council extended condolences to the victims’ families, friends, and loved ones, describing the loss as irreparable.
The Council also condemned reports that a passing passenger boat failed to stop and rescue victims struggling in the water. Authorities have called for information about the boat operator, urging anyone with details to contact the Council Secretary at 08035085782.
To prevent similar incidents, the Bonny Local Government Council advised travelers to monitor weather conditions closely and adhere to safety guidelines when using passenger ferries.
