The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reacted to the recent defection of some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying he should be commended rather than criticised.
Speaking on the development, Wike said those who once accused him of working for the APC have now joined the ruling party themselves, describing the situation as ironic.
“I have been watching on television and social media people who said I wanted to destabilise the party and that I was working for the APC. All of them are now in the APC,” Wike said. “So, if that is true, they should commend me for working for where they are heading. I should be praised for doing a good job for them.”
The FCT Minister also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decisive leadership, which he said has transformed the financial stability of states across the federation.
According to him, during his tenure as governor of Rivers State, he often struggled to secure funds from banks to execute projects and pay salaries. However, he noted that the situation has changed under the current administration.
“Today, by the leadership of somebody who has made it possible for all the states and the FCT not to be running around banks again, things have changed. Banks are now the ones looking for states to partner with. Every state now has money — not just to pay salaries, but to carry out projects,” he said.
Wike praised the president for taking bold and sometimes unpopular decisions that have begun to yield positive results across the country.
“That’s what this country needs now — visionary and purposeful leadership that can take decisions others ran away from. The president said he would take them, and he has. We are now seeing how things are turning around,” Wike added.
