The Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Eze Engr Samuel Osorochi Nwanosike, PhD, JP, has revealed that his formidable relationship with members of the Nigeria Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was because there was a time they became his saving grace.

Dr Nwanosike revealed this on Monday when he received in audience members of the NYSC serving under Ikwerre LGA.

According to him, “It is my culture, even since when I was a caretaker committee chairman of this Council in 2015, to have a formidable relationship with corps members. In fact, there was a particular time corps members became the only saving grace I had.

“In 2016 rerun election, corps members who I developed a relationship had a courage to stand against the Nigeria Army in this local government. It’s on record. Corps members said they were ready to die for anybody to change results that is coming from the polling units because they were aware that they as corps members conducted the election, they saw for themselves that this is what is coming from the polling units.

“And the Army, in collaboration with the then prosecutors who wanted to intimidate us with their weapons of violence, led by the current Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, was shocked that despite all the financial inducements, the barrel of gun intimidation, the corps members didn’t weaver. In fact, a lot of the corps members joined us to Abuja when they removed the tribunal from Rivers State to Abuja”.

While recollecting the undiluted evidence given by a corps member during a Senatorial District ruling that gave victory in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Nwanosike stated that he owed corps members a lot for standing for the truth.

“And so, I have agreed with my team that we are going to build a formidable lodge or complex for corps members in Ikwerre Local Government. Last week Thursday, I have gotten the land. The land has been handed over to me formally by the Wagidi the 40th, the Paramount Ruler of Isiokpo Community, who is the Chairman of Government Recognised Traditional Rulers. So by Thursday this week, I will take your leader to go and show him the place. We have also gotten a contractor that will build the corpers lodge and that lodge will not take us more than ninety days. We will complete it. We will furnish it”, he said.

The Ikwerre Council Chairman, while narrating his five points agenda to the corps members, noted that he is accomplishing them for the betterment of his people who gave him the mandate to oversee their affairs.

He encouraged the corps members to be the new Nigeria being yearned for, saying that on their shoulders stand the building of Nigeria.

Dr Nwanosike assured the corps members that their monthly stipend from Ikwerre Local Government Council would be paid on Thursday.

“Before Thursday you will get alert on your phones”, he said.

Responding on behalf of the corps members, the CLO thanked the Chairman of Ikwerre LGA for making life easy for them by attending to their needs.

Signed:
Hon (Prince) Chris Omodu,
Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
