Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised what he described as the insensitivity of the Bola Tinubu administration, insisting that leadership should be driven by compassion and sacrifice.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, Obi said any president who truly cares for the people must be willing to make personal sacrifices—even to the point of death—if necessary.
“If your people are dying, you should be ready to die. The president should also be ready to die,” Obi stated.
He condemned reported plans to purchase a new presidential jet for ₦150 billion, saying such a move is unjustifiable given the current state of healthcare across the country.
“I will not buy a jet when 80% of primary healthcare centres are not functioning. I don’t need one because I can go anywhere without it,” he said.
Reflecting on his time in office, Obi noted that he drove a Peugeot 406 for his first four years as governor and never used bulletproof vehicles. “Nobody will try to kill you if you do the right thing. It is when you do the wrong thing that you fear death,” he added.
Obi emphasized that leadership is not about luxury but about effective resource management and genuine concern for the well-being of citizens.
