Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, has alleged that the Nigerian Press was bought over in 2014 to bring down the government of former President, Goodluck Jonathan.
The Governor, made the allegation when the Board of Editors of Independent Newspapers, paid him a courtesy visit yesterday, to honor him as “Man of The Year.”
Wike who dedicated the award to Rivers people, said until Journalists rise up to their position as watchdogs of the society, Nigerians will continue to live in penury.
He said the press is partly to blame for the state of the nation, because they have kept silent, despite the ills in the society.
Wike also stated that Journalists are scared of criticizing the government of the day, for fear of being arrested, unlike when President Jonathan held sway as president.
He charged the media to live up to their responsibilities by holding public officers accountable, no matter what.
