Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has condemned the lack of respect for women in the country’s music industry, citing personal struggles early in her career to be taken seriously because of her gender.
In a recent interview with the BBC, the Love Me Jeje crooner said, “People don’t really respect women in the [music] industry,” adding that her experiences inspired her to work toward changing the way women perceive themselves in music.
Tems has launched The Leading Vibe Initiative, a platform she says will provide aspiring female artists with greater access to opportunities, a wider audience, and improved chances of success. She urged upcoming female musicians to clearly define their goals, brand identity, and personal boundaries as they navigate the industry.
