Over Eight thousand teachers are currently needed in Rivers State to fill the existing gaps created by the lack of teachers in the state.
The State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Collins Ejekwu, made this remark on the sidelines of the World Teachers day celebration.
He also assured that soon the issue of mediocrity in the teaching profession would be a thing of the past.
Collins Ejekwu also urged the Rivers State government to peg the retirement age for teachers in the state at age 65.
The theme of this year’s world teachers day is “The Teachers we want and Education we want”.
