Suspected assassins on Sunday attacked the traditional ruler of Bangha Kingdom in Ogoni, Rivers State, King Suanu Baridam.
The circumstances surrounding the attack were still unclear as of press time. However, the incident has sparked concern within the community and beyond.
Reacting to the development, a prominent Ogoni environmental rights activist, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene, condemned the attack, describing it as unacceptable and a grave threat to peace and stability in Bangha Kingdom.
In a post on his Facebook page, Dumnamene said he received “a shocking, regrettable and sad report” that the monarch, His Royal Majesty Mene Dr. Suanu T.Y. Baridam, JP, a first-class traditional ruler of the ancient Bangha Kingdom, had been shot by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.
He called for urgent attention to the matter and expressed concern over the safety of traditional institutions in the area.
