Port Harcourt — The factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to urgently conduct by-elections to fill five vacant Assembly seats, including that of the late Hon. Deenebari Loolo.
Amaewhule made the call on Monday during a press briefing following the Supreme Court’s dismissal of Governor Fubara’s appeal challenging the leadership of the Assembly.
Describing the court’s verdict as a “welcome development,” Amaewhule accused the governor of repeatedly disobeying court orders and withholding Assembly funds for nearly a year, depriving lawmakers of salaries and allowances.
“The judgment of the Supreme Court clearly shows that the Governor, who has a penchant for disobeying court rulings, has nowhere left to run,” he said.
