Students of Rivers State University have raised concerns over a resurgence of attacks on female hostels, citing security lapses on campus.
According to reports, suspected hoodlums broke into Hostel H around 5am on Monday, gaining access through a window and carting away mobile phones. The incident has sparked outrage among students, who accuse the university’s security personnel of prioritising enforcement of dress codes over safeguarding lives and property.
A concerned parent told our correspondent that the female hostels have become routine targets. He revealed that his daughter’s phone has been stolen twice this year due to the persistent break-ins.
The university management, when contacted, acknowledged the complaint and promised to respond appropriately.
This latest incident adds to a troubling trend. In 2023, Hostels C, D, and the NDDC Hostel were similarly attacked, with reports of stolen gadgets, valuables, and alleged cases of rape. Those incidents triggered student protests and prompted a visit from the now-suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
