The federal government has dragged the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to court over its prolonged strike action. This is as talks between both parties have failed.
A source in the Ministry of Labour revealed that the government asked the court to accelerate hearing on the matter in order to bring the dispute between the union and the government to an end.
According to him, the action is in conformity with Section 17 of the Trade Dispute Act.”
“In view of the fact that ASUU members have been on strike since February 14, 2022, and have refused to call off the action, it would be appreciated if this dispute is given an accelerated hearing in order to bring the dispute to an end,” part of the letter to the court read.
The industrial action by ASUU commenced over seventh months ago due to failure of the government to meet its demands.
