Popular relationship coach and lead pastor of David’s Christian Centre, Kingsley Okonkwo, has sparked widespread debate on social media after urging men to raise their standards in marriage and avoid marrying women he described as “liabilities.”
The cleric made the remarks in a series of posts shared on Sunday via his official account on X (formerly Twitter).
Okonkwo argued that the declining interest in marriage among many men is largely due to the perception that the institution has become a financial burden rather than a partnership between two responsible adults.
According to him, many men are accustomed to relationships where they carry the entire financial responsibility, a situation he believes discourages them from committing to marriage.
“Men, it’s high time we start having standards as well. You guys are too used to women who are liabilities, that’s why less and less men desire marriage; they see it as a burden,” he wrote.
He further advised men to consider partners who are financially responsible and capable of contributing to the relationship.
“Men set standards like you won’t marry broke women too, that you want a partner and not a dependent. Maybe it will make more women work and not see marriage and dating as a poverty alleviation scheme,” Okonkwo added.
His comments have since generated mixed reactions online, with some social media users supporting his call for financial responsibility in relationships, while others criticized the remarks as insensitive and overly generalizing women.
