Spanish police have revealed that preliminary evidence indicates late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota was behind the wheel and likely speeding at the time of the fatal car crash that claimed his life and that of his brother, André Silva.
The accident occurred early Thursday in the northwestern province of Zamora. Authorities suspect a tyre blowout may have caused the Lamborghini they were travelling in to veer off course.
In an update on Tuesday, investigators said tyre marks and other findings suggest Jota was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. “All the tests carried out so far indicate that the driver of the crashed vehicle was Diogo Jota,” a police statement said.
Efforts to determine the exact circumstances of the crash have been hampered by the intensity of the fire that engulfed the car, nearly destroying it entirely. Police also noted that the stretch of road where the incident occurred is not classified as an accident-prone area.
