Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has announced plans to lead a protest march to the Aso Villa on October 20, 2025, to demand the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Sowore made the announcement in a statement posted on social media under the hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanu Update, where he also revealed efforts to mobilize political and regional leaders for collective action.
According to him, he has reached out to several prominent figures, including Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, and former Anambra governor Peter Obi, but has yet to receive direct responses from Otti and Soludo
He said Obi’s team reportedly informed him that the Labour Party leader is currently traveling but would be briefed on the development.
Sowore added that he also contacted former Vice President Atiku Abubakarthrough his aides and spoke with Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who promised to return his call. He further disclosed that Obinna Agwuocha, a member of the House of Representatives, responded positively and expressed support for the initiative.
Emphasising the urgency of the situation, Sowore declared that now is the time for all “leaders of conscience” to act decisively for Nnamdi Kanu’s release.
“This is not the time for hesitation. If we genuinely believe that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu deserves freedom, then every leader of conscience must act, now, not later,” Sowore stated.
