The Anambra State Government has announced the reopening of the Onitsha Main Market for full commercial and economic activities on Monday, February 2, after a one-week shutdown.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo ordered the temporary closure of the market after traders failed to comply with the state government’s directive to disregard the Monday sit-at-home order imposed by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The decision was taken during an unscheduled visit to the market by the governor, who was accompanied by top government officials and security personnel.
During the visit, Soludo reiterated his administration’s stance that there would be no further sit-at-home in Anambra State, stressing that such actions hurt the economy and livelihoods of residents.
The state government said the reopening followed renewed assurances of compliance and security measures to ensure uninterrupted business activities across the state.
