Obio/Akpor Local Government Area Sole Administrator, Dr. Ndu Walter, has officially renamed the council’s administrative building after former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.
The move reverses a recent decision by the former council chairman, Hon. Chijioke Ihunwo, who had earlier changed the building’s name to “Obi Wali Administrative Building” in honor of the late Rivers political leader, Obi Wali. Prior to Ihunwo’s renaming, the building was originally known as the “Nyesom Wike Administrative Building,” in recognition of the former governor’s contributions to the local government and the state.
Dr. Walter, who was appointed Sole Administrator following the dissolution of elected local government councils, reinstated the original name as part of efforts to preserve the legacy of Wike, who hails from the area and served as chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA before rising to national prominence.
The decision has sparked fresh political debates within the council, with some stakeholders questioning the frequent renaming of public structures tied to shifts in local political leadership.
